“What
makes you the right candidate?”
(A
brief overview of the current Memphis job market for Supply Management
Professionals)”
Our Speaker:
For
Kristin Lockhart, when things come
together for her at work, it's something she said compares to the excitement
that comes when a sports team gets a big win. In her position as manager of the
executive recruiting division at SEACAP Financial Inc., she gets to help people
find their dream jobs. "It's just such a rewarding thing to think that you
helped not only your client, but also the candidate to get a good match," she
said. "And when it all feels so right, you think this is going to be successful
and everybody will benefit in the end. It's just like winning the big game, and
we get to win one almost every week." SEACAP Financial is a business advisory
firm that was opened five years ago to work with privately held or family-owned
businesses. The company provides its clients merger and acquisition strategies,
financial resources, business consulting and executive recruitment. SEACAP isn't
a job recruiting service per se. Instead, Lockhart said SEACAP consults with job
candidates to find out what would make them happy. And one thing Lockhart said
she and her team try to do is help candidates realize that a job is more than
just picking up a paycheck every week. "We had a gentleman just this week and
there were two different employers that were very interested in him," she said.
"(Co-worker) Joan (Niemen) and I talked about
it and we both said we really wanted him to go with employer A because it really
would be a more rewarding place for him to be. When he called and said he
decided on that same one, we were just so excited."
When SEACAP was
started five years ago, the executive recruitment wasn't a major part of the
business. Rather, it was something SEACAP principals Mackie Gober,
Waldrup Brown and Bob King later realized could be added to enhance the
service the company offered its clients. When a company acquires another one,
for example, the new owners might realize they need an employee who possesses
different expertise than what they have available. "So initially it started as
a way for SEACAP to help those companies fill those voids and search for the
right people who were a fit," Lockhart said. The executive recruitment division
since has grown and now offers human resource services for individuals as well
as businesses. "We do the whole career services side of it for people that are
in job search mode," Lockhart said. "We can help them write their resume, help
them talk about networking alternatives. We'll even take them through interview
training and interview coaching."

History of NAPM Memphis: 1944 to Present
The original group of purchasing practitioners convened at some time during the early years of World War II and called themselves the Shelby County Purchasing Agents Association. Records indicate that the majority of those members were women, apparently because of the war. The first president of this group was H. R. (Pappy) Graves of the National Fireworks Company. click here for a complete timeline of the development of the NAPM Memphis affiliate
